The 18th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards comes off in a couple of months and information reaching Showbiz is that nominations have started pouring in.
Organisers of the event, Charterhouse, opened nominations at the beginning of the year and artistes have up to the end of January to submit their entries.
According to Nii Ayitey Hammond, Board Chairman of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, nominations are currently being submitted both online and manually by artistes and their managers.
When asked to comment on the numbers as far as the nominations are concerned, this is what Nii Ayitey had to say.
“I have seen artistes and their managers troop in and out of the office but I haven’t taken note of the numbers yet, some are also submitting their nominations online so I can’t readily give the numbers now,” he said.
Controversial artiste, Shatta Wale, who has not been part of the VGMAs for the past two years, is reported to have said that he will be part of this year’s event and Showbiz asked Nii Ayitey if he would be allowed to be part of the process.
“That will be the decision of the VGMA board. Charterhouse does not determine who gets nominated or not. The board is yet to be constituted and decisions taken by last year’s board are not transferable.
“Shatta Wale did not submit his nomination for last year so naturally he couldn’t have been part of the process so I am sure the board will consider his nomination if he submits it this year,” he said.
Nii Ayitey encouraged artistes to submit their nominations once it falls under the year under review, “if you released a song between January 2017 and December 2017 and think you deserve a nomination, kindly submit your nomination between now and the end of January for consideration,” he said.
The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is undoubtedly the most prestigious event on the entertainment calendar and is usually attended by the creme de la creme of celebrities as well as the general public. The topmost award is the Artiste of the Year which usually has very strong contenders.
Already, some pundits are rooting for Dancehall artiste, Ebony to walk away with the ultimate at this year’s award while others contend that she hasn’t gotten there yet.
